Directions Dance

Objective
Students will be able to correctly say direction words in English

INTRODUCTION:

Teach students right, left, froward, and back.

ACTIVITY:

  1. Place arrows on the board to represent each one (←↑→↓).  Review quickly.
  2. Place a sequence of arrows (6-8) on the board and demonstrate how → would mean go left one step.  Then show the students the movement of the sequence while saying the direction you are moving in (right, left, back, back…)
  3. Have students move and speak with you while doing the sequence together.
  4. Introduce music and have the students move and speak to the beat.  I used “Jump” by House of Pain, but any music with a clear beat should do.   Repeat the sequence at least twice before creating a new one to be performed.
Notes

Students can choose the directions for the class to perform next or in groups of 4-6 students, create their own dance to perform.

Once students have the four main directions mastered, you can add things like up, down, jump, etc, and represent them through symbols like *
