Circle Karuta

Objective
To allow students to practice any target question and answer many times.

This game is played with a target question such as, "What animal do you like?" and a target answer such as, "I like dogs."  Vocabulary flashcards (around eight) should be placed on the board for all to see.

Prep:

  1. Separate students into groups of 3-5. Groups form circles.
  2. Give each student a set of 8 minicards, precut.
  3. As a class, decide which 4 minicards they will use. Remove the other four and place aside.
  4. Students shuffle minicards and hold the deck behind their backs.
  5. Choose who goes first (P1) and a direction (clockwise).

Game:

  1. All together, students ask a target question such as, "What animal do you like?"
  2. P1 answers with the target sentence plus a vocabulary of his choice: "I like cats." While saying the target sentence, P1 places a card from behind his back in the center of the circle.
  3. If the card P1 placed matches the vocabulary word he said, then someone from the team must slap the pile of cards. The first person to slap the cards gets to take the whole pile.
  4. If the card does not match what P1 said, then repeat steps 1 and 2.
  5. The game continues around in a circle, with the pile of cards getting bigger and bigger until they are slapped.
  6. The goal of the game is to have the most cards at the end.
